The Hague has a new top event: The Hague African Festival. The festival, with its world-class musical elements, is an obvious meeting place for cultures and is taking place as part of The Hague Festivals this year for the first time!
Sankofa Association
The Hague African Festival is organised by Stichting Sankofa, an organisation for African migrants and former organiser of the African Festival Delft which has now been discontinued. Sankofa’s aim (the name means ‘in order to understand today, you must know your past’) is to build bridges between Africans and the Dutch. The Hague was chosen as the festival location; “due to the international aura of the city as a place of justice and peace and the commitment demonstrated by the local council”, according to chair George Duncan. He continues; “It is a challenge to build a new event here.”
African music
The Hague African Festival offers a multicoloured and inviting window on Africa, while focussing on the richness of African cultural heritage and contemporary developments within African culture.
The African way of life
The Hague African Festival is an obvious and very hospitable meeting place for all of The Hague’s residents. It is an international event for an international city, allowing it to place itself even more firmly on the cultural world map. Experience ‘the African way of life’!
